City by City – Salzburg

Why did we choose Salburg for our (hopefully) White Christmas?

Well firstly it was a difficult task to find a packaged holiday of only a few days which would include our Christmas festivities. Finding a hotel in a foreign city is fine but how do you find the best restaurant for your Christmas dinner or plan other activities such as seeing the lights, the Christmas markets or a concert. This package through Holidays on Location had it all, right there at our finger tips. They have packages for other cities as well but the thought of the alpine day with the sleigh ride topped it off and made our decision easy. Salzburg is only one and a half hours by train from Munich which also made the access to and from very easy and part of our rail pass.

The train route from Munich to Salzburg should be very picturesque travelling past Lake Chiemsee and various stretches of Bavarian landscape.

We will depart Munich in the morning after checking out of our apartment and plan to arrive in Salzburg just before lunch so that we can drop our bags at the hotel and start exploring. Our hotel will be the NH Salzburg City which is close to the Mirabell Gardens and only 2km from the station. Most of the historic city sights are just a walk away. Breakfast is included each day in our package.

Hopefully we will have time for cake and coffee – maybe Sacher Torte – before embarking on a one and a half hour Salzburg city sightseeing tour which starts at 12pm. The cost includes a 24 hour Salzburg card which provides free transport on all public buses within the city limits and free admission to all major Salzburg sights. One of the places I would love to visit is the Marionette theatre.

Our time is free until 3pm the following day which will be Christmas Eve, when we will be taken to a Christmas concert at either Mirabell Palace or Salzburg Fortress. Following the concert our Christmas Eve dinner will be served at either our hotel or K&K restaurant in the old town.

On Christmas Day our full day Alpine Glacier excursion and Sleigh Ride begins with a drive along the Salzach River valley past many of Austria’s ski resorts. Near Schladming, we will ascend up to the “Steirische Mansau” 1000 metres above sea level at the base of one of the Alpine glacier massifs – the Dachstein.

In the village we have time for lunch in one of the local inns and then our sleigh ride across the field before our journey home.

The cost of this package for anyone interested is AUD$612 pp including all I have mentioned and the Salzburg City tour and card is AUD$50pp.
To me this really shows the Christmas we only see in movies and cards as our Christmas in Australia is so different and something we will all remember for a lifetime.
