Well I’ve been back at work for just over a month now since our trip to Carnarvon Gorge and we are really in planning mode for our overseas trip next year. We plan to leave just after Matt’s birthday in mid October and not be back until the start of December – yes almost 7 weeks. So there is lots of planning to do.
It’s not just hello Spain but also Portugal and then two weeks to take in World Expo 2020 in Dubai. So it’s about time to fill you in on the outline of the trip.
Leaving Brisbane we will have a 3 night stopover in Dubai staying close to the airport and the Dubai Creek or old town area. We can revisit the souks – spice, gold, perfume and textiles and cross the creek on the Abras. We have visited this area before so it won’t be a rush and we can catch after a little after the long flight and be ready for our travels in Spain.
Refreshed, we will fly from Dubai to Barcelona where we are independently travelling by train for 10 days. We will have 3 nights in Barcelona, travel along the Mediterranean coast to Valencia for 3 nights and then make our way inland to Madrid for 4 nights.
Our last train journey in Spain sees us travel south to Seville where we will meet our river cruise on the Guadalquivir River with Croisi Europe for 7 nights. We take in day trips to Cordoba and Granada as well as cruising to Jeriz and Cadiz.
At the conclusion of the cruise we will fly from Seville to Lisbon for 4 nights before taking a train north to Porto and again joining Croisi Europe for a 7 night cruise on the Douro River which takes us back in to Spain with a day trip to Salamanca.
As the cruise ends we say goodbye to Spain and Portugal and return to Dubai for two weeks. This time we will stay near the Marina district which is close to transport to the Expo site. Between our days and nights at Expo we will take in some of this area that we missed in 2013.
And finally in early December we will be back home.
Both cruises have been booked and deposits paid and we have made the booking for the hotel in Dubai near the Marina. Flights and hotel bookings for the remainder will come up soon so there is lots of research and planning happening in spare moments. Stay tuned for more armchair travel.
