Where to and How Long – Our Itinerary

Posted on

It has taken months of tooing and froing, adding and deleting and lots of googling to come up with a plan that takes in what we all want to see, where we want to go and to stay in cities for a reasonable amount of time to do these things.
Our decision to travel by train and make the most of first class travel means that our travel day will be treated as our rest day. Our aim is also to stay at least three nights in major stops to allow us to see as much as possible and not be totally rushed.
Due in part to Matt wanting to see a soccer match in Manchester we will leave Brisbane on Thursday 28th November and fly directly to Manchester. So our itinerary looks like this.
Thursday 28 November 2013 – Fly out of Brisbane at night
Friday 29 November – Arrive in Manchester around lunchtime
Saturday 30 November – hire car to drive around Oldham and Rochdale areas
Soccer game at night
Sunday 1 December – morning in Manchester
Afternoon train to London

Thursday 5 December – Eurostar to Paris in the afternoon

Thursday 12 December – Morning train to Milan

Monday 16 December – Train from Zurich to Frankfurt in the morning
We will have about three hours in Frankfurt

Including a day trip to Wolfburg for the VW factory
Friday 20 December – Train from Berlin to Munich
Friday 20 December to Sunday 22 December – Munich
Monday 23 December – Train Munich to Salzburg for our White Christmas adventure
This inlcudes a Christmas concert, Christmas Eve dinner and a Sleigh Ride in the mountains on Christmas Day
Thursday 26 December – a long travel day
Train from Salzburg to Munich and then on to the airport
Fly from Munich to Dubai arriving at almost midnight
Friday 27 December to Sunday 29 December – Enjoy Dubai. Warm up and relax
Monday 30 December – Fly out of Dubai about 10-30am to Brisbane
Tuesday 31 December – Arrive home in Brisbane about 6-30 in the morning
We don’t go back to work til Monday 6 January, so lots of time to catch up with family and friends and of course SLEEP!!!!
I have been spending lots of time with our travel agent Courtney at Harvey World Travel at Stafford to decide on the accommodation. More to come.

Sandra, your trip sounds wonderful. DD and I have travelled quite a lot by Eurail. I think the most important thing we learned was travel light and take a small case – one that you can easily lift up onto the overhead racks (if there are any) by yourself. Space for luggage is often limited, and often at the end of a carriage, not near your seat. If seats are “back to back” it is often possible to slide a small case in the triangular space created between them. DD and I never made any fashion statements on our travels, and we were heartily sick of what we had packed by the time we got home, but we did travel with minimal hassles – all important in unfamiliar places.
